DO YOU AVOID SOCIAL SITUATIONS BECAUSE OF FEAR THAT PEOPLE ARE JUDGING YOU?
Do you ever find that you shake or tremble in front of people?
Are you avoiding places where others might watch you?
Do you often feel yourself blushing, thinking that everybody is staring at you?
Do you think about yourself in a highly negative and critical way and feel that others think the same about you?
Do you worry about fitting in?
Would you just like to be able to enjoy yourself when you attend social gatherings?
If you are struggling with social anxiety, you may really want to be able to enjoy social situations but instead find that you are terrified of humiliating yourself and consumed with worry that people are watching and judging you. It may get so bad that you have an upset stomach, nausea, an elevated heart rate or a feeling of tightness in your chest. You might worry that people will notice that you are blushing or sweating. Maybe the feelings are so overpowering, you wish that you could just disappear.
When you are invited to an upcoming event, you may find that you worry weeks or even months in advance of it. Perhaps the thought of being with people and feeling like you won’t be good enough is so terrifying, you get anxious just thinking about it. Maybe you have cancelled at the last moment. You may have even missed out on many family events and let friendships fade due to these social anxiety symptoms. You just want to be confident and relaxed in social settings and feel able to meet and connect with new people.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Dealing WITH SOCIAL ANXIETY CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT.
Social anxiety, also called social phobia, involves feeling intense and unreasonable fear of being scrutinized and watched by others in social situations. For some, this occurs primarily in specific situations, such as eating in restaurants or meeting new people. Some people find that they function very well in their work environment, but it is in social events that they experience extreme discomfort. And for others, anxiety can happen in any social situation.
To add to all of the emotional and physical discomfort, you may believe that you are the only person who suffers with this, and then get upset with yourself for not being able to change it on your own. Actually, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, over 15 million Americans suffer from social anxiety. Regardless of the ways in which your anxiety is manifesting itself, you are not alone.
Everyone has felt a bit anxious at times, maybe when giving a speech or meeting with a supervisor. And some people may feel a little shyness as they enter a new situation. Social anxiety is more than just being shy. For the person who suffers with social anxiety, the fear of being scrutinized and judged by others is so intense, that he or she may avoid such situations altogether. Maybe you are afraid that you will say or do something embarrassing. You may realize that the fear is unfounded or irrational, but you feel powerless to stop it. All you really want is to be able to let go of the fear that controls you and start enjoying your life.
You Can Get Relief With Social Anxiety Treatment.
If you find that you are beginning to avoid events that you feel may trigger anxiety or that the intensity of the fear is interfering with your daily life, it’s time to get help. Using a social anxiety therapy approach that is tailored to you, I can help you get to the root of the problem. In working with so many people, I have found that often times the way you feel today is connected to things that happened early in life. And more valuable than just discovering the root, we do the inner healing work that is quite powerful. The result is that the way you feel in current situations begins to change.
One client I worked with who was suffering with social anxiety had been working in the same job for many years. She really wanted to change careers. In order to do this, she needed to go back to school and learn new skills. Her fear of being in new situations was unbearable and prevented her from pursuing her goals. I used a combination of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Ericksonian Hypnosis and behavioral and cognitive techniques to help her get relief. This approach is a powerful way to help people to create change.
It is possible to feel calm and confident in social situations. One client described to me how good if felt when she realized she had stopped thinking people were watching her. She was able to go places and really didn’t care what others might be thinking about her. You, too, can enjoy this freedom from social anxiety.
You may believe that social anxiety treatment can help you feel comfortable and confident, but still have questions or concerns...
I don’t think just talking about my social anxiety is really going to help.
At our first appointment together, I will listen as you explain how social anxiety is disrupting your life and how you want to be different. I will also teach you some skills to bring down the anxiety that you can use immediately. During our sessions together, we won’t be just talking over and over about your social anxiety. Often times, the root cause is something that occurred early in life. I will help you get to the root of the problem and heal what needs to be healed.
